U.S. Mental Health Issues - Statistics & Facts

In 2016, almost one out of every five adults in the United States had some form of mental illness in the preceding year. Nearly seven percent of all adults suffered a major case of depression within the same period. American Indians and native Alaskans have the highest level of mental health issues, while Asians and Pacific Islanders have the lowest. Oregon and Utah are the two states where the highest percentage of poor mental health is reported, while South Dakota and New Jersey are reported to have the lowest percentage.

Mental illness in the United States

· One in four adults or about 61.5 million Americans experiences mental illness in a given year. One in 17 Americans lives with a serious illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder.

· Approximately 20% of youths ages 13 to 18 experience severe mental disorders in a given year.

· Nearly 7% of American adults or approximately 15 million people live with major depression.

· About 1.1% of American adults or about 2.4 million people live with schizophrenia. About 2.6 % of the population or 6.1 million live with bipolar disorder.

· Roughly 18% of American adults or 42 million people live with anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder and phobias.

· The use of antidepressants among adults 18 or older increased more than fourfold, from 2.4% to 10.8% between 1988-1994 and 2007-2010.

· The top drug in the United States in terms of sales from June 2013-June 2014 was Abilify, an antipsychotic medication used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and a variety of mood disorders, according to IMS Health. It made $7.2 billion.

Why San Diego?

San Diego is a major city in California, United States. It is in San Diego County, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico.

With an estimated population of 1,406,630 as of July 1, 2016, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. The city is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the United States Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.

The largest sectors of San Diego's economy are defense/military, tourism, international trade, and research/manufacturing, respectively. In 2014, San Diego was designated by a Forbes columnist as the best city in the country to launch a small business or startup company.

San Diego has the poverty rate of 14.7%. 4.2% of the adults in San Diego is living with serious mental illness. The rate of psychiatrists per 100,000 population is 22.8%.

In 1987, 7.85 million or 3.24 percent of the nation's population visited mental health professionals for psychotherapy. Ten years later, that number had risen to 9.69 million or 3.59 percent. The researchers noted large increases in the use of psychotherapy among people from the ages of 55 to 64. The proportion of psychotherapy patients who also took psychiatric medication, increased to 61.52 percent in 1997 from 31.52 percent a decade earlier.

An estimated 106,500 psychologists possess current licenses in the United States. California (17,890), New York (12,020) and Pennsylvania (5,620) have the most licensed psychologists, while Wyoming (170), South Dakota (190) and Alaska (190) have the lowest licensed psychologists. 33.9 psychologists are licensed per 100,000 population in the United States.
