Parenting style and social skills

Parenting style plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s social skills, influencing how they interact with peers and navigate social environments. Different parenting styles authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful each have distinct impacts on a child's social development. Authoritative parenting, characterized by warmth and structure, often fosters strong social skills, as children learn to communicate effectively, handle conflicts and develop empathy through supportive interactions. In contrast, authoritarian parenting, with its focus on obedience and control, may limit a child's social skills by reducing opportunities for autonomy and social experimentation. Permissive parenting, marked by indulgence and lack of boundaries, can lead to difficulties in social regulation and self-discipline. Neglectful parenting, where there is a lack of responsiveness and involvement, often results in poor social skills due to minimal guidance and emotional support. Research highlights that children raised in environments that balance warmth with appropriate limits tend to exhibit better social competence, including higher levels of empathy, cooperation and problem-solving skills. Understanding the link between parenting styles and social skills development is essential for fostering healthy social interactions and emotional intelligence in children.
